In this presentation, I will present the initial findings from my research conducted about the Prison College Program at Adams State University (ASU) in Colorado where distance learning is the predominant model. Learning about emotional costs and rewards associated with distance higher education in prison can enhance access and experience.

Postsecondary education in carceral spaces poses extraordinary challenges in order to be successful. Some of these challenges include, but are not limited to, structural and technological obstacles, while others focus more heavily on the abilities of students to understand complex material. These challenges are to be discussed in this paper.

Towards a Research Infrastructure for Higher Education in Prison

Our study will contribute to the development of a research infrastructure for higher education in prison by articulating the need for this research infrastructure, providing an overview of existing efforts in this area, identifying informational gaps a research infrastructure might help fill, and providing strategies for building such an infrastructure.

Amplifying Freedom: Increasing the Carceral Society’s Access to HEP Through Incarcerated Scholars

This proposal addresses the frailty of HEP as a liberating concept when the type and number of incarcerated students is limited and how this frailty is overcome by increasing access to HEP for people with longer sentences, teaching them to champion the cause of liberation to a highly oppressed society.
